The Training Program in Epilepsy Research (TERP) is open to PhD students who have completed their second year of graduate training, postdocs and residents. The following information is provided to help guide trainee applicants as well as outline expectations asked of faculty members participating in the T32 training program, which includes teaching core curriculum, mentoring students, supporting program activities and attending events.
For trainee applicants
Qualifications
Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and will be evaluated by the T32 Faculty Mentoring Committee based on the following selection criteria:
- Strength of undergraduate and graduate academic record (based on CV or biosketch)
- A 1 page research plan describing the research to be performed during the award and relevance to epilepsy
- Nomination letter from candidate’s advisor (a 1 page letter)*
- Commitment by the mentor and trainee to participate in training grant activities
*Advisors should explain the candidate’s project, why the candidate is a good fit for this training program, current performance and future potential for a career in science and/or medicine.
Eligibility
- Both PhD and MD/PhD (MSTP) students are welcome to apply. Students should be in their third or fourth year of graduate training.

For faculty
Coursework
- Participate in teaching the core curriculum when requested. This could include teaching a lecture in ANAT 215 or supervising a journal club.
Mentoring
- Work with the trainee in your lab to ensure they are making good progress in research.
- Meet with your trainee to complete an IDP at least once per year.
- Reinforce participation of trainees in program activities, including coursework, workshops, seminars, retreats, and career development activities.
Support
- Regular attendance at TPER events. Faculty participation is critical for the continued success of our program. This includes EpiCenter seminars, T32 retreats and other formal program activities.
- Acknowledge T32 support on publications: This work was supported by funding from NINDS under Award Number T32NS045540.
- Provide information for progress reports in a timely manner.
- Keep the TPER updated on trainees after completion of the training program to allow tracking.
